Tech
We love opensource software, especially:
- Drupal — content management, user management
- OpenSim — 3D online simulation
We have been working with these two software packages since 2007 and really think they are best-in-class for Content Management and 3D Online Simulations. Don’t worry, there is a really complicated diagram below outlining how we use these systems for brands and solutions like we are operating at Heritage Key.
Opensource is not just cool and exciting–it is less risky. The software development world has changed significantly in the last 5 years. When you want to do something new and cutting-edge today, you will be doing something fairly complicated and woven into the web. Some elements will be very technical, others will be about managing and creating new types of content. You will be trying to offer an end-to-end service and consistent user experience for your community members. While you can connect and swap out web-based services, you still need the competence and control of your core systems. Grab the source code and control your destiny on the web.
And don’t fret, you are joining a community of administrators, content creators and users who are also trying to achieve similar objectives. Expect new releases, expect things to get fixed and find common areas where you can join the development effort.
Who else uses these software packages:
- Drupal : the Economist, the BBC (for Comic Relief), thousands of websites
- OpenSim : IBM, Intel, hundreds of early adopters
How Rezzable Delivers Real-Time Social Communities
The main pillars of our solutions are Community, Content and Platform. Community is now way beyond any one website and a brand needs to have reach as well as relevance to feed the demanding community. As the web evolves, we see that it is content, not just functionality, that keeps people engaged. The Content has to be deep, fresh and allow room for community members to contribute and be an important part. We haven’t got it all figured out yet, but it is working right now today.
The diagram below tries to outline how the software comes together to provide an integrated offering to enable content-oriented communities to grow. This is all currently in operation at http://heritage-key.com where you can go from the flat web, albeit media rich, to the 3D immersive web in as few as 2-clicks (and one download).
